Belize was once a “someday” idea.
Before the move, Richard and his wife Lisa lived in Northern Ontario. Richard worked as an exterminator and invested in a few small residential properties. Lisa worked in education.
Belize had been in the back of their minds for years. A real estate workshop brought the possibility closer, and in 2022 they sold most of what they owned and moved with their family.
They rented before they bought.
Richard and Lisa spent about a year learning how they wanted to live before committing to a property. They eventually chose Consejo Shores in the Corozal area.
They found more than a property. They found routines, familiar faces, and a community. Their own experience gives them a personal understanding of the questions that come with starting somewhere new.
That experience changed the job.
Richard does not believe the useful question is simply, “Which house do you like?” The better question is whether a place supports the life you are trying to build.
Outside real estate, Richard keeps a small farm and builds many of the things he needs himself. It is part of the same pull toward independence that brought the family to Belize.
There is a personal side to finding home.
Lisa brings her perspective on the move, settling into daily life, and getting to know a new community. Richard can talk through property questions while Lisa shares what helped her feel at home.
You do not have to be ready to buy to start a conversation. Sometimes the first thing you need is someone who remembers being in your shoes.
